Storm causes damages, landslides on NH-37

A fierce storm accompanied by heavy rain and wind which blew early Thursday morning left extensive damages in many parts of the state.
The storm cut off power lines leaving many areas without electricity.
Several landslides were reported in parts of National Highway-37.Amid this, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continuation of the heavy showers in Manipur till May 11.The storm which blew in the early hours of Thursday swept away houses in Tamenglong, Noney, Thoubal and Imphal East districts.
Trees were uprooted and power lines snapped, leaving many areas without electricity.
In Imphal East district, the strong winds damaged a 33/11 KVA power line post in Kairang, cutting off the electricity in the area.
Apart from this, several houses were blown away and trees uprooted in other areas of the district.
In Thoubal district, the storm, which occurred first at 4.10 am Wednesday and later at 11.30am, left extensive damages in the district.
The strong winds swept away a furniture house (carpentry workshop) belonging to L Paresh, Ksh Chaoba and M Santa of Kairembikhok.
Several broken tree branches and electric posts littered the road from Kairembikhok to Wangjing, restricting movement along this road and cutting off power in many areas.
The houses of Mutum Bijaya Devi (56) and Lourembam Jiten (54) at Waithou Lipok area were also blown away by the storm.
The office of BJP Thoubal District in Khongjom, which was left barely standing after a mob attack, also partially caved in amid the heavy winds.
Tamenglong district also reported significant damages with houses blown away and power lines cut with incessant rain severing connectivity between Tamenglong to Noney.
In Noney district, a 33/11 KVA power line post broke down in the heavy storm, cutting off power to many areas of district and disrupting normal functioning of government offices, telecom services, schools and private businesses.
Meanwhile, the incessant rain led to occurrence of several landslides along the stretch of road from Awangkhul and Irang of Imphal-Jiribam road (NH-37), halting all movement on this road.
Four people were left injured after they were struck by lightning at Phaknung Mayai Leikai in Imphal East district on Wednesday.
The injured have been identified as Khundongbam Deban (54) s/o (L) Birchand of Phaknung Awang Leikai, Thoudam Noren (48) s/o (L) Samungou of Chingarel Te-jpur, Mayengbam Romeo (38) s/o Mohan of Phaknung Sangomsang and M Ratan (53) of Phaknung.
All four sustained injuries after getting struck by lightning and were taken to JNIMS hospital for treatment.
According to a police report, during the heavy storm which occurred on Wednesday morning, the lighting struck the Meira Shang of Phaknung Mayai Leikai.
At the time, all four individuals were seeking shelter from the rain at the shed but unfortunately, sustained injuries due to the lighting strike.
