Manipuri Poetry Day celebrated

Fiction and Poetry Club, Manipur organised Manipuri Poetry Day' at Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) conference hall, Nityaipat Chuthek, Keishampat here on Tuesday.
The programme presided over by Fiction and Poetry Club president Heisnam Bud-hichandra was attended by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi Manipur Language Advisory Board convenor Prof Rajen Toijamba as chief guest, and Sea-Waves Manipur president Yengkhom Indira Devi as guest of honour.
In his address, Prof Rajen Toijamba elucidated that literature of every language of the world begins with poetry.
While dissecting Manipuri literature, there is presence of poetry since early days.
Manipuri poetry has evolved across generations, showcasing distinct styles and improved quality, ultimately securing a prestigious place in literature all because of the tireless efforts of successive generations of Manipuri poets, he added.
While commending the initiative of Fiction and Poetry Club for observance of Manipuri Poetry Day on the full moon day of Manipuri lunar month Mera, he highlighted the need for mass observance of the day by different organisations to develop and promote Manipuri literature.
A poetry session co-chaired by Sahitya Akademi awardees Lanchenba Meetei and Birendrajit Naorem and Manipur Language Advisory Board Ne\v Delhi former convenor Nongmaithem kirankumar was also held as a part of the programme.
Poets Salam Tomba and Kengba Yengkhom were also honoured for their roles in promoting Manipuri poetry by presenting awards.
Moreover, the 23rd edition of Fiction and Poetry Club research journal 'Mapao' was also released.
Meanwhile, Sheirengbasinggi Apunba Lup (SHAL), Manipur organised a poetry session named 'Mera Thanilgi Numidangwairam Ama' at Kombirei Leikol, Yaralpat.
The session was chaired by poets Rajendro Okram and Rajmani Nongthomba.
