Concern raised over safety of tanker water

Imphal, June 19 2024:
Even as most households are buying drinking water from water-tankers, how safe is the water has not been checked and this has become a major public health concern especially after the recent flood that inundated and contaminated most water bodies, said an official of the Food Safety Department.
The official, who doesn't want to be named, said the sale of water by tankers needs to be regulated and streamlined by the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) and relevant Departments to address the safety concerns.
While the sale of water by tankers needs to be monitored and the source of water verified, these have not been done.

The pH level of the water, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), turbidity and quality need proper checking.
Only verified tankers may be allowed to sell water for the safety of the public, said the official.
Drinking water contaminated with arsenic has major health implications.
This leads to arsenic poisoning which causes cancer and skin diseases.
The water should also be checked for such harmful contaminants, added the official.
The Food Safety officer further stressed that identifying and verifying the source of water is a must to address the safety concerns.
Ponds, streams and underground water may be contaminated with harmful chemicals from fertilizers used in the fields.
Water from such contaminated sources may cause serious harm to public health and wellbeing, said the official.
The recent floods contaminated most water bodies, and most households in Imphal and elsewhere are buying water from tankers.
Proper inspection and monitoring of the sources of water is needed to ensure safety of the water, added the official.
Summarily, the water that is being sold by tankers needs a proper laboratory test.
The source of the water must be verified and the tankers should be regulated by the relevant Government authorities under a properly developed policy, said the official.
On the other hand, the packaged drinking water available in stores have FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) mark.
The packaged water which has the FSSAI mark has been tested in the laboratory for safety.
People should ensure the water they are buying has the FSSAI mark.
People who are buying water from tankers and other sources should use the water with caution.
Boiling the water before consumption is advisable, said the official.
