Imphal, August 22 2026:
President of All Manipur Recognised Private Schools' Welfare Association (AMRPSWA), Laishram Joy has stated that students in the State are unable to get the required number of schooling days due to various prevailing issues, resulting in inability to complete the prescribed syllabus.
He was speaking at the 23rd Private School Day organised by the AMRPSWA at Loktak Hall of Manipur Press Club here today.
The programme began with paying floral tributes to late founders of private schools.
Laishram Joy said that as per the Right to Education norms, the number of working days for secondary level is 220 days.
Of this, 20 days are for examination and assessment and another 20 days for extra-curricular activities, leaving 180 days for teaching.
However, due to the unrest in the State, schools are able to function only for 100 to 110 days.
Because students do not get full academic time, they cannot complete their syllabus.
This raises serious concern whether these students will be able to compete in national level competitions.
He appealed to the Government to look into the matter.
He also pointed out that there are many teachers in different schools in the State who are yet to acquire B.Ed qualification.
Due to limited seats in B.Ed colleges, inservice teachers are unable to pursue the course.
He urged the Government to introduce a one-time measure for the B.Ed programme for such teachers and make teaching qualifications mandatory.
Stating that there have been repeated appeals not to involve educational institutions in agitations and bandh and blockades, he said it is unfortunate that the sector continues to be affected.
Attempts to pressurise by closing schools should not be made, whether by the Government, private sector or any organisation, he added.
COHSEM Secretary Khundrakpam Ashikumar attended the function as chief guest, while BOSEM Secretary Sijagurumayum Jitelal Sharma and AMRPSWA advisor N Tomba attended as guests of honour.
On the occasion, the 'Late M Jamini Leima Memorial The Dedicated Teacher Award 2026' was presented to Y Jadumani of St Stephen Higher Secondary School, Canchipur.
Senior members of the association were also felicitated with gifts as a mark of respect.
