Tension at Mayang Imphal over fish theft

Imphal, February 09, 2011: A long prevailing tension between two neighbouring villages in Mayang Imphal over the matter of theft fish from fish farms subsided when one of the thieves was caught by the people while two others surrendered to the police today.

Tension arose when fish from the farms at Mayang Imphal Yangbi, Sangoisabi and Thiyam Kon areas were stolen frequently in the last few years.

One of the thieves, Md Jalauddin (42) was caught by villagers last night.

The two who surrendered were Md Nahayai (42) and Md Abdulah (40), all three hail from Mayang Imphal Yangoon.

With the continuous theft of fish the farmers had been keeping a close watch.

Farmers intensified their vigilance in the last few days and last night detected three persons with fish baskets and gunny bags coming in three separate bicycles on the Yangbi road.

When farmers asked them to stop, two of them ran away leaving behind their bicycles and wares leaving behind Jalauddin.

Nahayai and Abdulah were also caught later from their respective homes, but escaped again.

Following the incident, a public meeting was held at Mayang Imphal Konchak today at 8 am.

Village leaders, local clubs and Meira Paibis of Mayang Imphal Yangoon were invited to take part in the meeting.

When none of them turned up, outraged villagers of Konchak marched towards Yangoon around 1.30 pm.

However, police blocked them on the way.

They also fired some rounds in the air in a bid to disperse the crowd.

At the same time, some villagers of Mayang Imphal Yangoon village took out their licenced gun and fired at least three rounds towards the crowd but none was injured.

Despite, the strong resistance from the police, villagers of Konchak continued shouting to find out the thieves.

However, the police finally controlled the crowd.

Later, in the evening around 7 pm, Nahayai and Abdulah surrendered to the Mayang Imphal PS.

Police have registered a case against them.
