Workshop on environment, preservation held

A three-day workshop titled "Listening to our environment, showcasing a multifaceted approach to addressing environmental issues and promoting the preservation of traditional knowledge within the state," concluded at the conference hall of TS Paul Manipur Women's College on Saturday.
As an integral component of the workshop, participants were demonstrated on production of bio enzymes from easily obtainable fruit waste and molasses.
This environmentally conscious practice, when applied appropriately, yields bio enzymes that serve as effective and eco-friendly household cleaning agents.
Emphasising the practicality and affordability of this method, experts underscored its potential to mitigate the adverse effects of conventional chemical-based cleaners.
Dr Deshworjit Ningombam, assistant professor at Jadonang Memorial College, further augmented the discussion by shedding light on the indispensable role played by over 390 sacred groves in preserving the state's rich biodiversity.
Expressing concern over the declining numbers of these sacred spaces, Dr Deshworjit urged for concerted efforts towards their conservation to safeguard the region's natural heritage.
In addition to the discourse on environmental stewardship, the workshop also delved into the area of traditional knowledge preservation.
Khumanthem Nganthoileima, in her presentation on Leirol Isei, provided invaluable insights into the intrinsic link between Manipuri folk music and cultural heritage.
Drawing attention to the erosion of traditional knowledge alongside linguistic and cultural aspects,.Nganthoileima emphasised the importance of documenting and revitalising these cultural treasures for posterity.
Through Leirol Isei, attendees gained a deeper appreciation for the harmonious relationship between humanity and nature that has been ingrained in Manipuri tradition for generations.
The workshop culminated with a lecture by Radhamohan Thokchom, Maichou Atomba of Sana Konung, Utra Sanglen, exploring the profound significance of Umang Lai Haraoba in shaping societal norms and values.
Radhamohan elucidated how the ritualistic practices associated with Umang Lai embody fundamental principles of morality, discipline, and sportsmanship, thereby enriching the social fabric of Manipuri society.
Moreover, he elucidated how Umang Lai serves as the custodians of ancestral wisdom, embodying a holistic worldview that encompasses the cyclical nature of life and the interconnectedness of all living beings.
The workshop was made possible through the collaborative efforts of various organisations, including Happy In Khol, IQAC, Department of Environmental Science, Department of Biotechnology, Eco Club, UBA Cell, TS Paul Manipur Women's College (TSPMWC), Mongshangei, and Midas Touch (Environmental Organisation), Imphal.
The event received generous support from Henry Martyn Institute (HMI), Hyderabad and International Centre for Research, Interfaith Relation, and Reconciliation, underscoring the collective commitment to fostering environmental consciousness and preserving the cultural heritage of Manipur.
