Statue of Bir Tikendrajit unveiled at Rongpur

A new statue of Yuvaraj Bir Tikendrajit, the revered Manipuri freedom fighter who sacrificed his life for the motherland, was unveiled at Rongpur Pt-II in Silchar, Cachar district, on Saturday.
The programme was jointly organised by the Bir Tikendrajit Memorial Committee, Rongpur.
Manipuri Youths' Front of Assam (MYFA); United Peoples' Front (UPF), Manipur; and Paona Club, Rongpur Pt-I .
The unveiling ceremony was attended by Bir Tikendrajit Memorial Committee, Rongpur president Thangjam Tomal Singha; Sekmai AC MLA and former Minister Heikham Dingo Singh; social worker Nameirakpam Budhachandra; United Committee Manipur (UCM) president YK Dhiren; UPF Manipur president Nongthombam Rupachandra; UPF Manipur advisor Khomdram Ratan; Paona Club president Kundrakpam Biswajit Singha; land donor Ningombam Promila Devi; Manipuri Language Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi member Dr KN Chand; and MYFA president Thangjam Brojen, who were members of the presidium.
Heikham Dingo Singh and other dignitaries formally unveiled the statue and paid floral tributes to Yuvaraj Bir Tikendrajit.
The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, followed by a welcome and keynote address.
The dignitaries and guests were also honoured with traditional lengyan.
A welcome song was presented by Sobita Sharma, while a souvenir titled Ningsing Chefong was unveiled by MLA Heikham Dingo Singh.
A minute's silence was also observed in honour of the freedom fighters of Manipur.
Speaking on the occasion, Heikham Dingo Singh lauded the initiative to erect and unveil the statue of the great freedom fighter, describing it as an important step towards preserving and promoting the history and legacy of Manipur's heroes.
He also stressed the need to promote and preserve the statues and historical monuments located in the Rongpur region of Cachar district, calling for collective efforts from both the Government and the public.
Referring to the difficulties faced by people from Manipur in finding accommodation while travelling to Silchar, the MLA said that, as per the directive of Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, all necessary preparations for the construction of a guest house in Silchar have been completed and the project would be taken up soon.
