KGB Vidalaya inaugurated at Thamnapokpi

Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro inaugurated a Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya at Thamnapokpi in Bishnupur district today.
KGB Vidyalaya is a residential school established under the Sarva Shikshya Abhiyan (SSA) to provide free education from Class VI to VIII to economically backward girls.
Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, Education Minister Okendro said that the State Government has set up a monitoring committee in each of the 60 assembly constituencies of the State headed by the local MLA concerned to improve the education system.
The Education Department has so far established 11 KGBVs in all nine districts of the State.
There is one KGBV in each of the districts except for Chandel which has got three such schools, he noted.
Okendro further said that KGBV has been set up in every district to impart free education to 100 girls belonging to economically backward classes.
The students are also being provided free hostel facilities along with a monthly stipend of Rs.1000 each.
The KGBVs were first established in hill districts in view of their backwardness in education, but such schools have also been established in valley districts since 2012-13.The Government is trying to increase the number of KGBVs in the State, Education Minister stated.
Okendro further maintained that the students of Government schools were once underestimated but now they are excelling in various fields.
The underprivileged students would be considered for providing free higher education under centrally sponsored schemes of RMSA and RUSA, he added.
The inaugural function was also attended by Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Parliamentary Secretary M Prithviraj, MLA I Ibohalbi, MLA S Bira, MLA T Mangibabu and Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur district JA Shimray.
