Debunking 'myth' on teaching/learning science

Imphal, October 17 2013: Debunking the myth that teaching of science to students is costly, a three-day long State level training workshop on learning science through low cost hands on experiments has begun from today at Manipur Press Club here.

Teachers from various schools are taking part in the workshop which is being organised by Manipur Science and Technology Council (MASTEC) under the sponsorship of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

The inaugural function of the workshop was attended by Additional Secretary of Science and Technology, Government of Manipur Kh Raghumani Singh, IAS, as Chief Guest, Director of MASTEC Th Surendranath as President and Senior Lecturer in DIET, Government of Assam Nripen Saikia, who is also the resource person of the workshop, as Guest of Honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Nripen Saikia said that knowledge of science and technology is essential for development of any Nation.

That is why the Government of India has initiated various policies and programmes for popularisation of science and technology among the people.

However, people normally look upon learning science as something very expensive,which is not at all so.

Even if equipments required for conducting experiment are very costly, science can still be taught to the students and make them understand easily by using low cost materials which are available easily in our own houses.

In his address as Chief Guest of the function, Kh Raghumani pointed out that the importance and role of science is very important.

But most teachers have this misconception that teaching of science to students in class room required expensive equipments when the fact is that science can be taught and made the students understand without spending so much money.

He expressed hope that the teachers who are taking part in the workshop would utilise the knowledge gain in making their students understand science easily through low cost hands on experiments by using easily available materials.

During the technical session of the workshop, Nripen Saikia demonstrated some of the popular practical science classes using easily available materials like pieces of rubber tubes and empty water bottles much to the amusement of the participating teachers.
