Imphal, February 04 2025:
Rural Development & Panchayati Raj minister Yumnam Khemchand, who was summoned to Delhi by the union home minister on Monday, met BJP national spokesperson and MP Dr Sambit Patra and apprised the latter on the current situation in the state and communal divide among legislators of the party's state unit.
According to a source, Khemchand, who left for the national capital on Monday, disclosed to Dr Sambit Patra about the growing lack of trust of the people in the BJP and its MLAs due to the conflict, raising concerns about the party's position and future prospects in the state.
The RD&PR minister also opined that the party would be hard to impress the people if the centre fails to act as per the wishes of the people, the source conveyed.
While no report has been received on whether Khemchand met the union home minister on Tuesday, he (Khemchand) is expected to return on Wednesday.
Mention may be made that Manipur Legislative Assembly speaker Th Satyabrata was also summoned to Delhi by the union home minister on Tuesday.
Although there were reports he would dash to the national, sources said he is still at home.
On the other hand, speculations are rife that the ensuing 7th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly slated to commence from February 10 would not be smooth sailing for the ruling parties.
NPP, which had withdrawn support from the CM Biren-led government, would be sitting in the opposition bench with six of its seven MLAs after one passed away recently.
In addition, the hearings of the disqualification petitions filed against five JD (U) MLAs, who joined BJP continued at the Speaker's Tribunal on Tuesday, with the next hearing fixed on February 7.There are also speculations that a no-confidence motion might be moved against the leader of the House during the session.
As the powers and functions of a Legislative Assembly speaker in such a situation is of paramount importance, several legislators are of the opinion that speaker Th Satyabrata might have been summoned twice by Amit Shah to deliberate on such matters.
As such, a team of central leaders might be arriving here before February 10 to deal with outstanding issues and also resolve the internal differences between the state party leaders, the source conveyed.
