Ukhrul, May 19 2015 :
With the aim of becoming the Cleanest Village in Ukhrul district, Cingjaroi CV has come up with a Green Initiative under the aegis of its Eco Village Committee (EVC) -- a local mechanism evolved by the village authority to ameliorate the adverse impact of fast degrading biodiversity in and around the village.
Taking its first steps on the road towards developing Chingjui CV into an eco-friendly village, EVC organized a 'Green Day' program at on 17 May wherein a community tree plantation was officially launched by headman AS Raizar at the village locality.
Jubilate Kazingmei project Manager VVD and Aran Chihui Social entrepreneur attended the launching function held at the Chingjui Christian Church as resource persons for the morning session and evening session respectively.
Expounding on the global issue of climate change, Kazingmei lamented that 79 per cent of the total land of Ukhrul district measuring 4, 544 sq.
km are in a state of degradation, while another 12 per cent have been affected by Jhuming cultivation and only a 5 per cent is being used for productive agricultural purposes.
He further cautioned against mindless exploitation of nature and its rich resources, while pointing out that indiscriminate use of chemical for agriculture and fishing, unchecked felling of trees for commercial purposes and large-scale burning of wood for charcoal inter alia are beginning to pose a great health hazard to the human populace due to degradation of eco-system around us.
He also highlighted various impacts of liberalization, privatization, globalization and India's economy policy upon the indigenous population and their land resources.
Calling for an urgent need to put a stop to the prevailing practice of exploiting natural resources for present needs and purposes, Chihui advocated that strict regulations should be framed to protect the flora and fauna and other natural resources.
"Anyone who indulge in illegal hunting, trading of natural resources could be made to pay a fine of not less than Rs.1 lakh," he adding that only this way we could check destruction of our nature.
Participating in the plantation program, more than 50 school students planted saplings while each household was distributed a sapling or two each for planting at their respective residence.
As part of the ongoing initiative, each household in the village has undertaken to paint the roofs of their houses with green colour paints.
Meanwhile, Convenor EVC Aya Shimray speaking to media persons informed that the committee was constituted by the village authority in January this year taking cognizance of the need to create awareness among the villagers to not only contain forest destruction but also to promote clean and safe environment for the inhabitants.
"This is just a beginning but hopefully, we look forward to make our village the cleanest village in the whole of the district by 2016," he anticipated.
