Imphal, April 27 2025:
All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary (in-charge of Manipur), Christopher Tilak, on Saturday accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of bringing President's Rule instead of development and branding Manipur as epitome of lawlessness.
Addressing the media during the launch of state-level 'Samvidhan Bachao Rally' organised by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) at Congress Bhawan, here, Tilak said India's strength lies in its diversity, with over 300 ethnic communities, more than 4,500 castes, 35 major languages, and multiple religions.
Reflecting on Mahatma Gandhi and Dr BR Ambedkar's contributions, he noted that the two leaders had personally experienced the country's diversity and laid the foundation for a Constitution that would uphold it.
Though the Constitution was officially adopted in 1950, its process had already begun in 1920, he contended.
The AICC functionary alleged that the BJP is violating the Constitution and creating chaos in the country.
BJP has destroyed the fabric of Manipur.
It brought President's Rule instead of development besides portraying Manipur as an example of lawlessness, he maintained.
Tilak said Manipur's economy is severely impacted, unemployment is rising, and manpower shortages are evident across various sectors, including education and healthcare.
With many youths seeking jobs outside the state, BJP continues to neglect the pressing issues, he alleged.
Freedom, equality, social justice, economic justice, and political justice have been ignored under the BJP rule, Tilak said, further accusing the BJP of attempting to rewrite the Constitution, trying to degrade the social status of women, and failing to uplift Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and minorities.
He also alleged that BJP does not want the Northeast to be included in the country's development roadmap, preferring to keep the region isolated.
The secretary urged the Congress leaders and workers to raise public awareness about the BJP's alleged violations of the Constitution and the sufferings of the people, expressing confidence that public understanding of this issues would pave the way for the Congress' return to power in the 2027 assembly elections.
Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and former chief minister Okram Ibobi echoed similar in his speech.
He accused the BJP of attempting to modify the Constitution but expressed firm belief that they would not succeed.
Manipur will never fall apart if members of all communities uphold the Constitution and treat it as a holy book, Ibobi said.
He appealed to all communities to refrain from raising demands such as separate administration or homelands, stressing that all issues could be addressed by confronting the underlying causes.
Even if mistakes had been made, he said, one must have the courage to admit the mistake.
MPCC president K Meghachandra, former deputy chief minister Gaikhangam, Congress MLAs, and several party leaders and workers also participated in the rally.
