Role of women hailed as many observe IWD

Stating that the restive situation in Manipur has subsided to some extent, RD & PR minister Y Khemchand stressed the need for women to continue playing proactive role in settling misunderstanding for peace and harmony in the state.
Speaking as the chief guest during observance of International Women's Day held under the theme 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress' jointly organised by Manipur State Commission for Women and Thongju Apunba Women Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited (TAWMCSL) at Hotel Imphal on Friday, minister Khemchand reminded the gathering that the Day is observed in recognition of the contribution made by women in different fields.
Stating that role of Manipuri women in social, economic and political spheres is known across the world, he also recounted the indomitable spirit of Manipuri women during the Nupi Lal and the establishment of Ima Keithel as well as in safeguarding the territorial integrity of Manipur.
Presided over by MSCW chairperson Salam Ulka, the function was also attended by Manipur State Rural livelihood Mission director N Bandana, MSCW members Lourembam Dayabati and Thumlip Tiningpham, and TAWMCSL president N Bimola as guests of honour.
The International Women's Day was also observed by Scheme Workers' Union.
Heirok at Devi Mandap Leikai with A1TUC Manipur general secretary L Sotinkumar, Thoubal district president U Rajmohon and All Manipur ASHA Workers' Union president Th Purnamashi Devi as presidium members.
Nongchup Imphal Palem Ima Apunba Lup (NIMPAL), Wakhallon Manaba Apunba (WAMA) Kangleipak, All Manipur Nupi Marup and Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK) also observed the day at their respective offices while organising committee and Women Cell of Waikhom Mani Girls' College observed the Day at the college seminar hall under the theme "To inspire others to understand and value of women's inclusion so that we forge a better world" .
National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) also observed the day under the tagline "Count her in accelerating gender equality through economic empowerment" as ETA Northeast Women's Network commemorated the event at Sendra Park and Resort with special priority given to womenfolk taking shelter in different relief camps across the state.
On the occasion, ETA handed over various awards which included Inspirational Woman of Manipur to Yogeeta Chanu Soram, Young Achiever to Somolia Konthoujam, Excellence in Social Service to Jina Thokchom, Changemaker in Education to Rajkumari Teresa, Entrepreneur of the Year to Ahongsangbam Premi, Resilience Award to Priya Thiyam, Extraordinary Woman Achiever to Mutum Nganthoibi, Amazing Mother Award to Ibelei, Resilience Award to Roma Loitong-bam and Pramo Phairen-jam, Exemplary Service in Healthcare to Dr Khagokpam Hirina Devi and Star Education Award to Dr Rajkumari Sanayaima Devi.
Government Hindi Teachers' Training College (GHTTC), Imphal and IQAC also observed International Women's Day at the multipurpose hall of the college located at DM University campus on Friday.
IGP (RTI) and Investigation Division MHRC head, Mamata Wahengbam narrated the challenges she faced as a women police officer, and how she overcame those challenges as a part of the observance presided over by College principal professor Th Asha Sinha.
Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Imphal West and district administration.
Imphal West also jointly organised the observance at Manipur Central Jail under the theme 'Inspire Inclusion'.
Track suits and stationery items were distributed to children in the detention centre and innerwears to adult inmates.
High Court of Manipur justice Golmei Gaiphulshillu spoke on the contribution of women in the society and encouraged the women inmates to walk the path of truth while wishing swift deportation of the foreigner inmates.
MSLSA member secretary Alek Muivah assured legal assistance to the inmates and spoke on the new scheme of the state government that provides monthly pension to women above 40 years of age.
Manipur Central Jail SP SK Vadrika, MSLSA deputy member secretary Rajshri Yambem, OSD Kh Rojita and officials of social welfare department as well as para-legal volunteers also attended the programme.
All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) celebrated International Women's Day by honouring women journalists at Manipur Press Club here on Thursday.
The celebration was attended by Manipur State Women Development Corporation chairperson and Naoriya Pakhanglakpa MLA S Kebi as chief guest, AMWJU president Bijoy Kakchingtabam as president and Social Welfare joint secretary Bantee Konthoujam as guest of honour.
Simple gifts were presented to the women journalists along with screening of 'AFSPA 1958' which won the Golden Lotus Award for Best Documentary at the 56th National Film Award, 2008 as a part of the event.
Meanwhile, GP Women's College Women's Grievance Cell Internal Complaint Committee observed the Day at the college library hall with Dhanamanjuri University vice chancellor professor N Rajmuhon, College principal Hijam Romi Devi and former principal professor Tamphasana Rajkumari as presidium members.
Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS), on observed International Women's Day by honouring women achievers in sports.
As a part of the event, YAS felicitated women coaches namely l.angam Chaoba and Sanglakpam Chaobi Devi.
Chaoba was head coach of the national team that secured the runners up title at the Turkish Women's Cup (football) in Turkey, 2024 while Chaobi Devi represented India as one of the coaches at the Moscow Wushu Stars Championship, 2024, Russia.
