Imphal, August 16 2026:
The Federation of HAOMEE on Sunday organised the first "Indigenous Folk Fiesta 2026" at JNMD Academy, DM College Campus, Imphal.
Indigenous groups from across Manipur participated to showcase the State's rich cultural heritage.
Lamlai Assembly Constituency MLA Kh Ibomcha attended as chief guest.
Retired IAS officer M Harekrishna was guest of honour.
Federation of HAOMEE president Sapamcha ladumani presided over the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Kh Ibomcha described the fiesta as "historic and very significant".
He said Manipur has been facing a deep crisis since May 3, 2023, which has created division, mistrust and conflict among communities.
"In the past we lived together in harmony.
But today questions have arisen on who is indigenous and who is not, who is a settler and who is not as per law.
Taking advantage of this confusion, some groups are trying to create division and spread hatred", he said.
He added that the Federation's effort to clearly identify indigenous communities of Manipur through such platforms will help in addressing misunderstandings and bring clarity.
"If we fail to address this issue properly, the conflict will only grow further", he cautioned.
M Harekrishna stressed the urgent need for building an inclusive society.
"Manipur is going through a very sensitive time.
Our focus should be on how to bring people together again.
We must think about our children and the future generation.
Whether we can unite or not, whether we can live together in peace and work for development together - that is the question before us today", he said.
He urged all indigenous communities and other groups in the State to come together, respect each other, and work for peace and progress.
Sapamcha Jadumani said the Indigenous Folk Fiesta was organised to preserve, protect and promote the traditional art, music and culture of the indigenous people of Manipur, and to foster mutual respect and understanding among all communities.
The event concluded with a collective call to preserve indigenous identity while also working together for peace, harmony and development in Manipur.
