Ukhrul, May 08 2025:
A seven-member delegation from the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), led by its president Sword Vashum met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Thursday, at Raj Bhavan, Imphal and submitted three separate memorandums highlighting various issues and challenges faced by the tribal communities of the state, particularly those in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
During the meeting at 11 am, Sword Vashum briefed the Governor about the grievances outlined in the memorandums.
After listening patiently, Bhalla assured the delegates that he would review all matters and explore possible solutions, according to a statement from the TNL Media Cell.
The TNL chief highlighted the urgent need for increased representation of tribal communities in the state legislative assembly, stating that the same is crucial to ensuring that the voices of tribal communities are adequately represented in governance and the decision-making process.
Regarding budget allocation, Sword Vashum proposed that the state budget be divided into two components to facilitate targeted development and ensure that funds are utilised effectively to benefit all segments of the population.
He also pointed out the necessity of constructing a new office complex for the TNL and requested financial assistance, either in kind or cash, for this purpose.
He reasoned that a new office complex and a multi-purpose convention hall for the TNL in Ukhrul district headquarters would provide a vital space for community gatherings, cultural events, and administrative functions.
At the same time, the TNL chief urged Governor Bhalla to address administrative hiccups pertaining to long-standing issues that have affected the operation of various government departments in the hill districts like Ukhrul and Kamjong.
He asserted that these reforms are essential to streamline operations and improve service delivery to the public.
According to Sword Vashum, their meeting with the Governor was a pivotal moment for the TNL in its pursuit of justice and representation.
"The positive engagement with the Governor reflected a willingness to address long-standing grievances and enhance the socio-political landscape for tribal communities in Manipur," he noted.
Meanwhile, TNL expressed its gratitude to the Governor for his time and consideration, expressing optimism about the potential outcomes of this dialogue.
"The community looks forward to Collaborative efforts that will lead to tangible improvements in governance and development," the apex Tangkhul customary body added.
