Tamenglong, August 22 2026:
A comprehensive three-day climate and waste management awareness programme titled "Sort Responsibly, Reject Plastic, Safeguard the Climate" was conducted across four educational institutions and one hostel in Tamei from August 10 to 12, reaching more than 280 students.
The initiative aimed to educate students on pressing environmental issues, with particular emphasis on climate awareness, waste segregation at source and the severe ecological impact of single-use plastics.
The awareness sessions were conducted at Hamai English High School, Apou Kading High School, Lenglong High School, Langmai Higher Secondary School and Alpha Kapha Compassion Home.
The programme was carried out in collaboration with RNBA (Realm of Nature Based Actions).
The outreach was spearheaded by Mathiuthonliu Nkengnamai and her team as part of her ongoing project, Roots of Resilience: A Climate Action Network and Waste Smart Living.
The grassroots project is being implemented under the National Youth Climate Consortium (NYCC), a flagship initiative of the Bring Back Green Foundation supported by YuWaah at UNICEF India.
Mathiuthonliu was recently selected as the NYCC Climate Champion representing Manipur in this year's cohort.
She is among 30 young leaders selected from across the country for the third cohort of the prestigious NYCC fellowship, which recognises individuals between the ages of 18 and 29 for their commitment to building climate-resilient communities through local advocacy and action.
The current cohort represents 28 States and Union Territories, including island and Northeastern regions.
More than half of the selected fellows identify as women, while over one-third belong to Adivasi and indigenous communities.
The awareness drive also received support from local leaders and administrators.
Local MLA Awangbou Newmai extended his support to the initiative, stressing the importance of climate literacy in ecologically sensitive districts such as Tamenglong.
The Zonal Education Office (ZEO), Tamenglong, facilitated the smooth conduct of the programme by issuing a No Objection Certificate and coordinating with the participating schools.
According to the organisers, the programme received an enthusiastic response and overwhelming cooperation from the principals, teaching staff and students of the institutions, reflecting growing awareness and concern among young people over environmental and climate-related challenges.
