Manipur remembers social reformer Arambam Samarendra on 26th death anniversary

Imphal, June 10 2026:
Multiple organisations observed the 26th death anniversary of noted playwright, dramatist and social reformer Arambam Samarendra on Wednesday with floral tributes and discussions on his legacy.
The Patriotic Writers Forum (PAWF), Manipur held a programme at Nungshikol Park, Chana Khumang.
It began with homage at Samarendra's statue.
Prof Chirom Rajketan Singh of Manipur University attended as chief guest, while PAWF president Naoroibam Khamba Luwang presided.
Dr Naorem Ahanjao Meitei spoke on "Arambam Samarendra as a Post Colonial Playwright" and filmmaker OC Meira on "The Unified Identity of Manipur Envisioned by Arambam Samarendra" .
A poetry recital session was also held where 20 writers presented poems dedicated to the late playwright.
Speakers recalled Samarendra's vision of a self-reliant, united Manipur free from colonial and divisive forces, stressing that his message of hill-valley unity remains relevant.
Separately, a memorial lecture was organised at Lamyanba Shanglen, Konung Lampak under the theme "Brainstorming on Human Rights, Conflict Resolution, Ethnicity and Grassroot Feminism".
Feminist and human rights defender Dr Roshmi Goswami delivered the lecture.
Former DM College Principal Prof Chungkham Sheelaramani presided, with Grace Thumra Shatsang, Dr Ningombam Shreema and Dr Feroja Syed as discussants.
ICHAL president Tongbram Ibemcha said the Trust has been holding the memorial since 2000, shifting to Lamyanba Shanglen in 2006, though it was paused during Covid.
At Khurai Nandeibam Leikai, the Social Standard Club organised a tribute at Samarendra's memorial.
Former UNLF chairman RK Meghen said Samarendra, founder member of UNLF, carried forward Hijam Irabot's struggle for a sovereign, egalitarian society.
He urged collective efforts to resolve the current crisis, noting that economic distress and violence have pushed many to despair, and called for a major initiative for survival and development beyond tributes.
