Imphal, December 17 2023:
A highway signboard put up by the National Highway and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has come under strong criticism as the distances to certain locations given on the signboard are allegedly incorrect and misleading.
Citing the alleged misleading information given on its highway signboard, many citizens have questioned whether NHIDCL arbitrarily picked up certain figures and put them on their signboards without actually verifying the distances to the specified locations.
One large signboard put up on NH-102 (Imphal-Moreh highway), a short distance away from Lilong bridge claims that the distance to Imphal from the spot is 5 Kms.

However, if one travels 5 Kms from the spot (signboard) to the North, one would find himself/herself in between Kakwa Naorem Leikai Narsingh Mandir and Kakwa Bazar.
The distance to several landmarks along highways are measured from a spot known as zero point which is located near the main gate of Raj Bhavan.
Measured from this zero point, the distance of Lilong bridge from Imphal along Imphal-Moreh highway is 10 Kms.
However, according to the NHIDCL's highway signboard installed a short distance away from Lilong bridge, the distances to Imphal, Kohima and Dimapur from the spot are 5 Kms, 154 Kms and 220 Kms respectively.
Questioning how did NHIDCL came to these figures, many citizens have pointed out that the distance from Imphal to Kohima is 137.3 Kms approximately and the distance from Imphal to Dimapur is approximately 203.3 Kms.
Even if 10 Kms is added to the distances given on the NHIDCL's highway signboard erected near Lilong bridge, the corresponding figures indicating distances to Kohima and Dimapur are incorrect, according to some citizens.
