Dingo treasures courage of Manipuri women

Imphal, March 08 2024: While underscoring their activism amid the present crisis in the state, Social Welfare minister Heikham Dingo has hailed the courage of Manipuri women, evident from many historical incidents.

Speaking as chief guest of the International Women's Day observance organised under the theme 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress' by Social Welfare Department, at the auditorium of DIPR, here, on Friday, Dingo informed that the department planned to organise the observance in a grand manner but it was cancelled due to the current crisis in the state.

He underscored the role of women and their courage in many historic events including the epochal Nupi Lal and Burmese occupation of Manipur among others.

He also emphasised on the role of Meira Paibi in contemporary Manipuri society including the current crisis, wherein they even challenged the Indian Army in order to keep the community safe.

The minister also highlighted various schemes of Central and state governments being implemented through the department with the aim of empowering women.

Manipur State Women Development Corporation Limited chairperson MLA Sagolshem Kebi, who also attended the observance, highlighted the role of women in bringing development in a society and said that encouragement is what they need in order to demonstrate their abilities.

She, however, hastened to add that just raising slogan of women empowerment will not bring anything positive but the society needs action to show their support towards women.

She also said that women have great will power and once they set a target, they put in all their efforts and resources to achieve that target under any condition.

Highlighting the changing outlook of the society towards women empowerment and their participation in key positions, the MLA gave herself as an example saying that it was the encouragement of her husband that she could contest the election and the support of society has brought her to her current position.

She also called upon the women of the state to take a united stand and make concerted efforts for restoring peace in the state.

Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Keisham Pradipkumar, Persons with Disabilities (PwD) commissioner Waikhom Birahari, IPR director Dr Th Charanjit and social welfare director Ng Uttam also attended the observance as guests of honour.
