Imphal, April 08 2010:
As in other parts of the country, thousands of people participated in Jail Bharo (mass court arrest) agitation in five districts of Manipur to protest escalating prices of essential commodities.
Apprehensive of the agitation turning violent, police resorted to firing tear gas canisters and water cannon to disperse them.
Joining the Nation-wide protest call of the Left parties namely, CPI, CPI (M), Forward Bloc and RSP, thousands of people staged court arrest in the district headquarters of Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Imphal East and Imphal West.
In Imphal East district, protestors started gathering at the Sanglen of Lai Khurembi, Khurai at around 10 am.

Before setting out for the mass court arrest, leaders of the Left parties explained to them about the significance of the event.
At half past noon, the leaders of the Left parties led the people in charging towards the office of the Deputy Commissioner at Porompat.
As the protestors holding placards and festoons inscribed with slogans like 'Stop price rise', 'Ensure food to all', 'Strengthen PDS system', 'Protect agricultural land', 'Provide job to all', etc approached the oil pump at Khurai Thoidingjam Leikai, they were stopped by the police.
After a brief confrontation, arrangements were made to arrest the protestors.
However, as the number of police vans was limited only around 300 of them have been arrested and the rest were dispersed.
However the protestors insisted that all of them should be arrested.
With tension running high, police first resorted to firing water cannon and later on tear gas canisters to bring the situation under control.
The arrested protestors were reportedly released at around 2 pm near the foothill of Chingkhei hillock along Tinsid Road.
In Imphal West district, the protestors first converged at the Sanglen of Lai Khamlangba at Uripok at around 10 am.
From there, they took out a rally and headed toward the office of Deputy Commissioner at Lamphel.
On the other hand, as part of the Nation-wide protest, the godown of the FCI at Sangaiprou was reportedly forced to shut down for one hour today.
According to a statement issued by State Secretariat member of CPI (M) Yumnam Ratan, party leaders and workers shut down the godown from 1 pm to 2 pm today and raised slogans.
