CCpur, August 16 2026:
Three student organisations of Churachandpur have jointly condemned the Churachandpur District Administration over the alleged lack of adequate arrangements for students participating in the 80th Independence Day celebrations, after more than 50 students reportedly suffered heat stroke and dehydration and required hospitalisation.
In a joint condemnation issued on Sunday, the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), Churachandpur, Zomi Students' Federation (ZSF), General Headquarters, and Hmar Students' Association (HSA) alleged that students had been made to undergo march-past practice for several days without adequate refreshments.
The organisations said students participating in the Independence Day parade were required to remain standing under the scorching sun for hours during the celebrations, while VIPs were seated in shaded areas and provided with refreshments.
They alleged that the lack of adequate care and consideration for the students resulted in more than 50 of them being rushed to the District Hospital for treatment.
The student bodies also expressed concern over the alleged failure of the District Administration to visit or extend personal support to the hospitalised students.
Such a visit, they said, would have demonstrated empathy and concern for the affected students, reassured their families and conveyed that their health and safety were valued.
While acknowledging that isolated cases of dehydration and heat stroke could occur during outdoor events, the organisations said the hospitalisation of more than 50 students was unprecedented in Churachandpur and reflected inadequate planning and arrangements for the Independence Day parade.
The student bodies urged the District Administration to take substantive and effective measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents, stressing that the safety, dignity and welfare of students must take precedence over their participation in ceremonial events.
They warned that in the absence of corrective measures, they may consider appropriate steps, including advising schools and students to refrain from participaring in events organised by the District Administration.
