Imphal, October 18 2023:
A project to provide alternative crops to farmers aimed at solving the problems of jhum cultivation and poppy cultivation in the hills is being taken up successfully, said Nongthombam Loyalakpa, Project Director, Eastern Border Area Development Authority (EBADA) .
EBADA's Alternative Farming System for Tribal Jhumias and Poppy Planters Project to provide alternative/high value crops was introduced in 2022, he said.
EBADA has Chief Minister N Biren Singh as the Chairman.
The first phase ended in April.
The second phase under NEC Shillong has been launched by CM N Biren Singh, and various farm equipment have been distributed to farmers, he said.
Under the project, farmers are given awareness on climate change, disadvantages of deforestation and harmful impacts of poppy cultivation.
Farmers are encouraged to adopt high value horticulture crops and avoid poppy cultivation.
Farmers who planted high value horticulture crops in the first phase are now reaping benefits.
The crops have matured and are bearing fruits.
They are now able to earn income, he said.
Loyalakpa said the project is active in the hills amid the present crisis.
Solar lamps and other equipment to be distributed to beneficiaries are on the way.
Once the crisis subsides and normalcy returns, the project will be enhanced, he said.
