Imphal, October 18 2023:
With the arrest of three more, the total number of people arrested so far by the police in connection with the shooting incident at Konjeng Hajari Leikai has reached five.
Police also recovered a Hyundai Elantra car used by the armed miscreants in committing the crime.
Meanwhile, the JAC formed against the incident has reiterated the demand for arresting former BJYM president Manoharmayum Barish Sharma, whom the JAC accused as the main culprit.
The three people arrested by Imphal West district police on Wednesday are identified as Nongthombam Tonu (38) of Nungoi Makha Leikai, Ningthoujam Vicky (30) of Kongba Nandeibam Leikai and Khaidem Nibash (33) of Singjamei Wangma Pebiya Pandit Leikai.
They were produced before the CJM Imphal West court on Wednesday and remanded in police custody for eight days.
Earlier, police had arrested Gurumayum Ray-ban (27) and Alex Ningombam (24), both residents of Brahmapur Laljilakpa Leikai on Monday and they were remanded in police custody for 10 days.
The incident occurred when a group of masked men entered the house of one Khaidem Bobo alias Seitaljit (38) son of late Mo-mon of Sega Road Konjeng Hajari Leikai and tried to abduct him.
As local people gathered upon hearing the commotion, the masked men fled the scene while opening several rounds of fire on the crowd that left five people including a woman and a minor injured.
Of the five injured victims, Priyananda Nongmaithem alias Tondon (43) son of late Mani and RK Medhabati (50) wife of Manao both of Sega Road Konjeng Hajari Leikai are still undergoing treatment at JNIMS.
The JAC members visited the two injured victims at JNIMS on Wednesday.
Interacting with the media during the visit, JAC convenor Chongtham Iboyaima said that they have received information of the arrest of five people involved in the incident.
However, the JAC is still demanding the arrest of Manoharmayum Barish Sharma, the former president of BJYM, as the JAC sees him as the leader of the gang.
While appealing to authority concerned not to grant him anticipatory bail, the convenor also demanded police to arrest the remaining members of the armed gang along with the weapons and vehicles used in committing the crime.
He further appealed to MLAs or ministers to refrain from pressurising police against arresting Barish.
In case there is any such pressure, the JAC will storm the residences of the MLA or minister concerned, he warned and informed that Keishamthong MLA is bearing the treatment cost for all the injured victims.
