Noted activist Dr Gina passes away, many condoled

Dr Gina Shangkham, one of the tallest activists of the North East India region, has passed away early today at her residence in Kapaam village, Chandel district, Manipur.
On the passing away of Dr Gina, many organisations, including NSCN-IM, Naga organisations, Moyon tribe based bodies and others have condoled.
Dr Gina Shangkham was a champion and pioneering personage in the field of education, cultural heritage, human rights and gender empowerment.
The apex body of Moyon tribe, Bujuur Aanchung Puh, (BAP) along with Bujuur Shanuw Ruwrkheh (BSR) and Thiimziih Teen Bujuur Ruwrkheh (TTBR), said today that they were saddened at the demise of the Laarchangnuw, Dr Gina Shangkham at her residence in Kapaam village, Chandel district, on January 2, 2025 .
Dr Gina has served across diverse organisations including the Naga Women Union (NWU), Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR), Indigenous Women Forum North East India, Bujuur Shanuw Ruwrkheh, Thiimziih Teen Bujuur Ruwrkheh and Bujuur Aanchung Puh, advocating for the rights and welfare of the Nagas and indigenous communities of the region.
Notably, Dr Gina Shangkham was the first woman from Chandel district to earn a PhD, making her a beacon of inspiration for future generations, said the Moyon bodies.
Dr Gina Shangkham gave her service as a teacher at South East Manipur College Manipur for thirty years and as a researcher at the Centre for Tribal Studies, Manipur University (1990-1995).Her contributions in research and development of cultural heritage have greatly benefitted across communities, the Moyon bodies also said.
In recognition of her unwavering dedication and selfless service, Dr Gina Shangkham was honoured with the prestigious "Lasrchangnuw Award".
This accolade celebrated her impactful work aimed at improving the welfare of various tribal communities, underscoring her commitment to social justice and community empowerment.
"Dr Gina Shangkham will be remembered as a pioneering figure with unwavering commitment to social activism," said the Moyon bodies.
In its condolence message, the NSCN-IM said it was "profoundly saddened" by the passing of Dr Gina Shangkham, former president of the Naga Women Union (NWU) who departed today.
"She is a woman who loved the Naga history and their political rights.
Her contributions to the cause of the Naga people were extraordinary and will always be remembered," the NSCN-IM also said.
"Our thoughts and prayers go to her family members.
We express deep condolences to her family members and close friends, said the NSCN-IM .
Different Naga apex civil bodies have also condoled the untimely demise of Dr Gina Shangkham, the first President of Naga Women's Union on January 2 .
In a condolence message from the Naga Women's Union (NWU) extends their deepest condolences on the passing of Dr Gina Shangkham, the esteemed first President of Naga Women's Union.
The statement stated that her departure marks the end of an era, but her legacy will remain an enduring light that continues to guide them.
The Naga Peoples' Organization (NPO) also expressed their heartfelt condolences on the demise of Dr.Gina Shangkham.
Her demise is a profound loss to the Naga People, and her extraordinary services will forever be remembered with gratitude.
On the other hand, the Poumai Naga Tsiidoumai Me (PNTM) expressed their profound sorrow and heartfelt condolences upon the passing of Dr Gina Shangkham, who was a remarkable leader and trailblazer and served as the former President of the Naga Women Union, Manipur (NWUM) .
The student body extended their deepest sympathies to her family, friends and all who were touched by her work.
May her soul find eternal peace and her legacy continue to inspire future generations, said the PNTM .
