Lamka, February 09, 2011:
As in other parts of the country, the second and final phase of Census 2011 has begun here with full support from COPTAM today.
Starting today, the second phase will continue till February 28. It will take into account of vital information about demography, besides economic and social changes, while extra care will be taken so as to avoid any duplication or omission, Jacintha Lazarus, Churachadpur DC told a gathering of church, public and student leaders.
Exhorting the gathering to encourage the public to feed the enumerators a fair and accurate response, the DC said that feeding wrong information could lead to losing one's own identity and warned the citizens from giving any fabricated information.
Addressing the gathering, COPTAM Chairman Letpu Haokip said the committee would back the exercise but on the condition that it conforms to the National guidelines and are not subjected to State Government's direction and respect the interest of tribal people.
It is pertinent to note that the Government has decided to prepare a biometric based National Population Register (NPR) along with the Census 2011. The Indian Census has been the most credible source of information on demography, economic activity, literacy and education, fertility and mortality, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and many other socio-cultural data since 1872.
