Imphal, November 30 2014 :
A poacher, infuriated by the advice of a wildlife activist to stop catching and killing wild animals, shot the wildlife activist on the leg before surrendering at Kumbi police station today.
The wildlife activist was shot for objecting to killing of wild birds which flocked at a fish farm located at Kumbi Ningel Leikai under Kumbi police station.
One Nongmaithem Kali alias Bhagirath of Kumbi Makha Leikai trespassed into a fish farm run by Wahengbam Tikendrajit of Kumbi Ningel Leikai at round 10 am of November 28 with an intention to hunt and kill wild birds which usually flocked at the fish farm.
But when Tikendrajit asked Kali not to shoot and kill wild birds, a heated argument ensued between the two.
Then suddenly Kali turned his gun to Tikendrajit and shot him on the right knee.
Tikendrajit is currently undergoing treatment at RIMS.
It is reported that the bullet is still embedded inside his body and he requires a surgical operation to remove the bullet.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered at Kumbi police station in connection with the assault even as accused Kali surrendered at the police station today, according to a source.
On the other hand, the Sangai Protection Forum has urged both the Police and the Forest Department to take up befitting action against the assailant in accordance to the law.
