Kangpokpi, May 02 2024:
The Kuki Chiefs Association Manipur (KCAM) has strongly denied the statement made by Chief Minister N Biren Singh about the emergence of 996 new villages in the State.
Terming the statement as "baseless allegation", KCAM said that the Chief Minister has erroneously linked the emergence of the new villages to migrants from Myanmar.
Letkhosei Mare, president secretary (external), KCAM said that N Biren Singh's disregard for the history and customs of the Kuki people is absurd while highlighting that the traditional chieftainship and inheritance laws of the Kuki people have long been established, allowing for the establishment of new villages within owned or demarcated lands.
He continued to say that "N Biren Singh's lack of understanding of customary laws and practices" only adds to the confusion in the State and his inconsistent statements, such as denying the existence of illegal immigrants, further damage the credibility of his claims.
He maintained that it is essential for the Government to thoroughly investigate before making such assertions in the future.
