Meitei-Pangal bodies condemn brutal assault on drivers; demand justice

Imphal, March 08 2024: United Meitei Pangal Committee Manipur, Manipuri Meitei-Pangal Social Unification & Upliftment Organisation and All Manipur Meitei-Pangal Clubs Organisation have strongly condemned the recent brutal assault of two Meitei Pangal individuals by unknown miscreants at Moreh.

Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club today, Raees Ahamed Tampak, spokesperson, United Meitei Pangal Committee Manipur termed the vicious attack on the two drivers as inhumane.

Stating that Manipur is slowly becoming a lawless State, he appealed for justice to be delivered and for the perpetrators to be booked swiftly.

The Meitei Pangal community has made relentless efforts to restore peace in Manipur but in some instances people of the community have been treated as "sacrificial lambs", he stated.

Calling for an end to such acts, he made a widespread appeal for a return to the version of Manipur from 2/3 years ago.

The Committee has also resolved to stand in solidarity with the JAC formed in connection with the assault of the two drivers.

Separately, at a press conference held at All Manipur Meitei-Pangal Clubs Organisation office located at New Checkon today, Hayatur Rahman Yumkhaibam, president, AMMPCO, stated that the two drivers were beaten up by suspected Kuki miscreants.

According to AMMPCO, the two drivers have been identified as Md Ila Singamayum, s/o Ingo and Md Imin Nongyaimayum s/o Sanaton from Kairang Chingya Leikai, Imphal East district.

They were allegedly assaulted for delivering sand and stones for the construction of a barrack, said the AMMPCO president.

Urging the Government to take action against the culprits, he cautioned that AMMPCO will launch a series of agitations in association with the people otherwise.

In addition, a press release issued by MMSUUO has vehemently condemned the act of assault perpetrated on the two meitei-Pangal drivers on March 7 terming it "barbaric" .

MMSUUO has made an earnest appeal to all communities residing in the State to refrain from committing such deplorable acts in the future.

The press release also added that during the course of the protracted conflict, Meitei-Pangal drivers who work tirelessly to deliver essential items to the people have been at the receiving end of assaults and worse on many occasions.

Accusing the State Government of remaining mum on the issue, MMSUUO also questioned how the miscreants managed to abduct the two drivers from Moreh which was quite close to a Central Force post.

It added that the presence of Central Forces have not done much to quell the sporadic acts of violence which breaks out in the nooks and corners of the State.

MMSUUO has appealed to the State Government to take appropriate legal action and punish the perpetrators responsible for the brutal assault on the two innocent Meitei-Pangal drivers.
