DGP inaugurates Police Hospital at Phesama

Phesama (Nagaland), October 12 2010: As its continued policy to streamline health care systems in the State Police establishments, another Medical Inspection Room (MIR) at the New Police Reserve here at Phesama has been upgraded to a hospital status today.

State Director General of Police (DGP) K Kire, IPS, has inaugurated this newly upgraded Police Hospital here at New Police Reserve on Tuesday.

Expressing his happiness on the up-gradation of the MI Room to a hospital status, the DGP said the hospital would be a permanent one and it would be at the present location for some time.

But gradually, they would try to get them to bigger place with more sophisticated medical facilities provided.

Recalling how the MI Room was looked after by one compounder with minimum facilities, the DGP said they could not help him much.

He however hoped that with the up-gradation of the MI Room to a hospital status, they would be able to provide him more facilities.

Kire said the Police Hospital at Phesama would not only be a "family hospital" for the police personnel and their families but also for those living in surrounding Phesama and Pfusama villages.

"Your caring of patients with love has made them much relief and they almost feel alright," the Police chief told to doctors and nurses and further urged them to be polite to whoever came to them for treatments or medical advices.

Narrating as to how they got the present hospital, the DGP said they sent proposal to the Cabinet for their approval for up-gradation of MI Room to a hospital status with some more posts of doctors.

"We were very thankful to the State Cabinet that they had sanctioned for the up-gradation with the posts of doctors," he added.

"When we asked for doctors, they also sanctioned posts of nurses too" .

Kire also informed that another program was in the offing.

He the Police Department had entered into a MoU with the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland to upgrade the existing Central Police Hospital at Chumukedima as a "First Referral Unit (FRU) for delivery of quality health care.

Disclosing that the Police Department had seven specialists including one cardiac surgeon who were deployed in battalion health units elsewhere in the state, he said they would be brought back at Central Police Hospital at Chumukedima and utilized their services with the up-gradation of the existing of the hospital (Central Police Hospital, Chumukedima) .

He further hoped that the mutual partnership between the two departments would bring a change in the health sector in the Police hospitals and units in the State.

The DGP hoped that their police personnel and families would benefit a lot from the referral unit.

"Instead of going outside for treatments, they would now be referred to Central Police Hospital, Chumukedima," he added.

"It will materialize soon and this way we would also be able to save government money to a large extent" .

Giving brief account of the MI Room, Dr John Khovung, Regimental Medical Officer of Police Hospital, Phesama, said the hospital was officially started in September 2008 as a Medical Inspection Room.

Prior to the establishment of the MI Room, there was no any health care set up to carter the medical needs of the population here at New Police Reserve, he added.

Stating that being Medical Officer of this hospital was a challenging task with the limited resources, Dr Khuvung also disclosed that with the basic health care facilities available, they catered not only to police personnel and their families but also to civilians from the neighboring colonies and villages.

Expressing his gratitude to the DGP for his personal interest and making the MI Room up-graded to a hospital in a short span of time, RMO said the DGP was kind enough for providing them emergency ambulance service equipped with medical facilities.

The function was chaired by Kohima SP Rothihu Tetseo and vote of thanks by T Metha, Additional SP, Kohima.

High ranking state police officials and villagers from the neighboring villages also attended the function.
