Imphal, February 06, 2011:
The number of seats of MBBS students admitted to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal will be increased from the present 100 to 150 in a year, assured Dr DC Jain, Special Director General of the Ministry of Health Services.
Dr DC Jain made the announcement at the RIMS Jubilee Hall Saturday in an interaction with the faculties of the institute.
The director was in the capital on a two day visit to the institute as chairman of a sub-committee of the executive council of the Union health ministry.
It may be recalled that apart from students of seven NE states there are 15 seats reserved for students from other parts of the country in the RIMS.
During his visit, he inspected departments and the hospital of the institute which had been taken over by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare from the Ministry of DoNER with effect from April 1, 2007. Director of RIMS, Dr S Sekharjit and other senior faculty members accompanied him in the inspection.
The Director apprised him that besides the buildings having become old, most of the equipment had become outdated and the numbers very inadequate.
On seeing the dilapidated condition of some hostels of the post graduate students and acknowledging that most of the buildings in RIMS are 40 years old, Dr Jain assured that new ones will be constructed and each department will have its separate building.
New equipment will be purchased for all departments, he also added.
The absence of boundary walls in the backdrop of the law and order situation has to be attended to and he felt that the same must be constructed soon.
He said that the health ministry will give top priority to the development of infrastructures since the erstwhile RMC had been constructed to provide medical education to just 50 students.
Dr Jain who heads a special sub committee of the Union ministry constituted by a meeting of the executive council of the ministry held on January 31 in New Delhi, had come here to see for himself the ground realities.
The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal has grown steadily since it was established as an institute for medical studies in the North East in 1972.It is now an institution with nearly 2000 employees with an annual outlay of more than ` 50 crore.
The institute is fully funded by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
However, for research activities grants are also received from various sources.
