Six admitted at RIMS, CrPC 144 clamped

Imphal, January 20 2016: Six persons were injured as two different groups of protesters clashed today at Torbung in Bishnupur district around 2.30 pm today.

The injured have been identified as Thingom (O) Sapana (40) w/o Tomba of Torbung Bazar, Thokchom Bijenti (23) d/o Biramani of Phougakchao Ikhai Makha Leikai, Thongam Keinahanbi (52) w/o Lukhoi of Torbung Sabal Leikai, Longjam Sanathoi (32) w/o Sanjit of Torbung Sabal Leikai and Thokchom Jati (60) w/o (L) Ranjit of Phougakchao Bazar.

All have been admitted to RIMS.

On the other hand, following the clash at Torbung, the Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur has clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC from Torbung to Phubala while the DC of Churachandpur has also imposed the same restriction at Kangvai area with immediate effect.

Strongly condemning the act of renaming the historic 'Thangjing hills' as 'Thangting', JAC Tiddim from Jan 17 had called an indefinite bandh along Tiddim road.

Giving moral support to the protest against changing the name to something else locals of Torbung held a sit-in-protest and held a meeting today.

Eyewitness Thingom Sapana who also sustained injuries narrated that a large group of women from nearby villages started vandalizing the peaceful public meeting by pelting stones at them.

Among the women protesters of Torbung, some were hit by stones and gun shots were fired from the other side, she added.

To disperse the scuffle between the two groups, police personnel fired tear gas shells and two persons sustained injuries, she said.

Further she said that UG groups which are under Suspension of Operation move freely in public places with firearms, she added.

Such action has created havoc in the area and the State Government must intervene to stop such acts.

It was reported that two injured persons in Bangla area which is one kilometer from Torbung were prevented from going to the hospital by the other protesters, she added.

Changing the name of Thangjing which is of historic importance to the State where most of our history are based is not acceptable and other forms of protest will continue if the State Government fails to change the name again to Thangjing, she declared.

Condemning the act of disrupting a peaceful protest, she asked the State Government to intervene and bring a peaceful and amicable solution at the earliest.

Meanwhile, MLA of Heingang Assembly Constituency N Biren visited RIMS and interacted with the injured persons and gave financial assistance.

On the other hand members of AMUCO who also visited the injured persons at RIMS urged the people to restrain from such incidence as it could incite communal violence.
