Hunger strike called off, striker released

After the Manipur Legislative Assembly passed a private member resolution on extension and adoption of Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873, FREINDS advisor K Birahari Sharma who was fasting for the same cause has called off his agitation, and subsequently was released on bail today.
Birahari called off his agitation at the request of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System convenor Sapamcha Jadumani and co-convenor Mutum Churamani this evening.
Speaking to media persons after his release, Birahari said he did not expect the State Assembly to take a resolution on ILPS so soon.
He, nevertheless, lauded the Assembly for the prompt resolution.
He confided that he did not expect himself to go home alive after he had launched fast unto death strike.
He had even told his wife about the rituals and activities the family should perform after his death.

Expressing hope that different political parties would shoulder due responsibility in enforcing ILP in Manipur, he said that parties which stay away from the issue would not find much support in the soil of Manipur.
After his release from JNIMS security ward, Bihari was accorded a warm reception at MDU Hall where a public meeting was also held on the issue of ILPS.
The meeting, after threadbare discussion, decided to hold three conventions�� one for legal experts, another for political parties and the third for academicians/intellectuals.
After holding the three separate conventions, a high power committee comprising representatives of legal experts, political parties, intellectuals and civil society organisations would be constituted.
The high power committee would lobby with all relevant authorities to enforce ILPS in Manipur by November 18 this by the latest.
In case the ILPS is not enforced in Manipur by the specified date, the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System would declare de facto enforcement of ILPS from November 19, 2012 .
