New Delhi, December 19 2010:
Lamenting that the Centre has not fulfilled the long-pending demand of the state to enhance its fuel storage capacity, Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh today said had the delay taken place in states like West Bengal or Maharashtra the situation could have turned violent.
"It is an eight-year-old demand to increase the fuel storage capacity of the state...The present storage capacity is very less and people face problem when fuel supplies run out," Singh said at the Plenary session of AICC here.
He said had the delay taken place in a state like Maharashtra or West Bengal, "the States could have burnt" .

Singh claimed that despite the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) being allocated with land to set up a bigger depot so that the storage capacity could be increased to three months from the present 13 days, no action has been taken so far.
Earlier this year, the Naga Students'Association, Manipur had enforced a blockade of National Highway 39 running into several days to protest elections to Autonomous District Councils in Manipur hills and Manipur Government's decision to ban entry of NSCN leader T Muivah to the state.
The blockade chocked essential supplies to Manipur.

The daily requirements of petrol is 72 Kl, said a source and added that the storing capacity of is diesel is 3341 Kl and this is likely to last for 24 days.
The daily requirements of diesel is 137 Kl.
For Aircraft Turbine Fuel, the IOC has a storage capacity of 600 Kl and the present stock is likely to last for another 50 days.
As for Kerosene the total storage capacity is for 336 days with 2528 Kl with the requirements pegged at 76 Kl per day.
This is not the first time that the State Government has approached the Centre to enhance the State's share of petroleum products as it is not only a land locked State but is also prone to highway blockades.
The increase in the supply of fuel to the State has to wait some time as it will be brought in once the rail track reaches Imphal.
The fuel will be transferred from the fuel bogey of the train to the oil depot by the technology known as Rain Fed.
The required area has already been identified and the process of compensation to be paid to the owners is also on full swing.
On the other hand, the Union Home Minister has convened a meeting at Delhi to discuss the development of NH-53 on December 21 .
Apart from the Chief Minister, Works Minister, Chief Secretary, DG of BRO, Chief Engineer of PWD and other officials concerned will attend the meeting and the matter of fuel will be discussed.
