Imphal, September 29 2023:
Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) has demanded initiation of legal action against Manipur police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel involved in using excessive force towards the agitating students.
In a press communique, FOCS information & public relations secretary Nerish Mangang said that RAF and state police launched brutal crackdown on school students who were protesting against the killing of Linthoingambi and Hemanjit by armed Kuki militants.
The security personnel used smoke bombs, tear gas shells', rubber bullets and even barrel guns to disperse the agitating students resulting in scores of suffering serious injuries.
Terming attitude and intention of the security forces towards the students as despicable, FOCS demanded that the state government find out those who used excessive force on the students and initiate legal action.
While observing that use of violent means to contain agitation in the valley testifies different laws for the hills and the plains, the secretary questioned the rationale and motive for the government authorities ignoring agitation, including violent and provocative ones, in the hills.
This is like different administrations in the hills and the valley, it added.
