Host Sunrise Youth Club (SRYC) defeated BWYC by three wickets in the opening match of the Pongal Cricket Tournament 2008-09 at SRYC Ground, Moreh today, reports our correspondent.
BWYC scored 155 in the 30 over game which was overhauled by the eventual winners in the 27th over with the loss of seven wickets.
The tournament held under the sponsorship of Tamil Sangam, Moreh and inaugurated by Commandant 31 Assam Rifle Col Ravroop Singh as the chief guest with SRYC advisor Ravi and Tamil Sangam vice president Murthi as the functional president and guest of honour respectively.
In his brief speech, the chief guest confided that presence of the Assam Rifles in the multi-ethnic border town is not only for combating UG elements but to restore peace and promote development and cordial co-existence amongst various communities.
Further conveying that in the next Army recruitment rally emphasis would be on selection of candidates from Moreh, Col Ravroop Singh also appealed to the local residents to extend maximum cooperation in endeavours of the Assam Rifles.
