Imphal, December 07 2008:
POLICE TODAY dispersed, chased and baton-charged a mob of local men and women who demolished shops at Chingmeirong Yengkhoiba Menjor Leikai in Imphal east district and piled up the furniture and burnt them.
The large number of women and men broke wooden doors, windows and shutters made by asbestos tin sheets on the ground that the shops were constructed on a plot which was being used as the grave-yard for the local people.
The matter has been pending in a court.
Despite the court's injunction to stop further construction, some people with influence in the high ups started erecting shops in the area.
The local Meira Paibi group led the demolition action.
However, police came and chased away the women folk.
Minister and circle MLA Y Erabot also came there.
