In a simple but solemn function, IGAR (S) Maj Gen CA Krishnan feted renowned boxing coach L Ibomcha Singh on being awarded the Dronacharya Award 2010. Sports Authority of India (NERC) Director in Charge Francis Marwen, Assam Rifles officers and SAI trainees were present in the function organised by 39 Assam Rifles at Mantripukhri garrison.
Maj Gen CA Krishnan while speaking at the occasion praised the efforts of L Ibomcha in bringing laurels to Manipur and the country.
He also assured the coach of any possible assistance and support from the Assam Rifles in future.
The IGAR (S) also exhorted the people of the State to keep up the sporting spirit.
L Ibomcha said that although he has retired from the Army, he keeps on maintaining Army discipline while giving training to his boxers.
Ibomcha added that all he has achieved today is because of the people's support and strict discipline which he learned while he was in the Army.
Soon after he retired from the Indian Army in 1980, Ibomcha constituted Manipur Amateur Boxing Association at Imphal to promote boxing and groom budding players.
Since then, he has been actively involving in training hundreds of players including Ng Dinko Singh, MC Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Suranjoy Singh and Nanao Singh etc.
L Ibomcha Singh will receive the award from President Pratibha Devisingh Patil in the award ceremony to be held on August 29 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
