KYSU, Kairembikhok (Thoubal) outplayed LSU, Chandel in the opening match of the First Inter District (men/women) Open Volleyball Tournament at the mini stadium, Senapati district headquarters today.
KYSU spikers won the group A opener 25-11, 25-20, 25-10 to begin their campaign on a bright note.
In the women's competition, Senapati district came from a set down to defeat NYVA, Nambol 15-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 .
Clustered into two groups the men's crown is being competed by seven teams namely NYC, Nongdam (Ukhrul), Spt-A (Senapati), MIKHYA, Mayang Imphal (Imphal West), SPT-B (Senapati) and SLC, Maibam (Bishnupur).
In the women's section, NYVA, Naorem (Bishnupur), SPT, NYC and LSU would compete for the top honour.
The tournament is being played on knock-out format.
The opening ceremony of the tournament, co-hosted by Senapati District Volleyball Association and Poumei Students' Union under the aegis of All Manipur Volleyball Association, was held with MLA of Saitu-Gamphajol Assembly Constituency Haokholet Kipgen as the chief guest with Joint Director of Youth Affairs and Sports M Pahari, ICHAM president N Rajendra and local leaders/elders gracing the occasion as presidium members.
The chief guest unfurled the tournament flag and took the salute by the march past contingents comprising of the
participants.
In his address, Haokholet Kipgen expressed confidence that participation in games and sports activities would inculcate and promote discipline among the youngsters which is also an important component in boosting peace and harmony.
He further emphasised that similar tournaments needs to be organised at a more frequent interval to ensure talent and energy of youths do not go waste.
