Imphal, July 29:
MSCP president M Hemanta and MLA Vivek Raj Wangkhem have today appealed to Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) to revoke the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the State immediately.
In a memorandum, the two leaders, while drawing the attention of the chairperson, lamented that the custodial deaths and army excesses have increased manifold in the State since the imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in the State in 1980 and added that the people will never be able to live peacefully without any fear until and unless the draconian law is completely lifted from the State.
Describing the recent twin killings of pastor Jamkholet Khongsai and Manorama by personnel of Assam Rifles as a disgrace to the world's largest democratic country, the leaders asserted that security forces are regularly eliminating innocent citizens in fake encounter under the immunity granted by the dreaded Armed Forces Special Power Act.
