Mirabai pledges to fight for women's cause

Newly sworn-in lone woman Minister in O Ibobi Singh led Congress Government, AK Mirabai Devi has expressed her desire to set up women police stations in every district of Manipur to thwart crimes against women and children currently rampant in the State.
AK Mirabai is among the three women MLAs who have been elected to the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
She is the second woman Minister of Manipur after W Leima, a Minister in SPF-I under the Chief Ministership of O Ibobi.
AK Mirabai, who is representing Patsoi AC, in her debut win got a Cabinet berth with the portfolios of Social Welfare and Co-operation.
Speaking to The Sangai Express at Raj Bhavan after her swearing-in ceremony yesterday, Mirabai lauded contributions of the women of Manipur in different issues.

Apart from taking the responsibility of looking after family, children and household chores, women in Manipur also take active participation in State issues, she noted.
However, crimes against women are still rampant in the State, she said and adding that there is need to take up immediate measures to check these crimes.
In this regard, she expressed her desire to set up women police stations in every district of Manipur to enable women to attend their complaints in time.
Acknowledging the courage of Irom Sharmila for carrying forward the campaign against AFSPA for more than 11 years, AK Mirabai said that she would put in effort to resolve the prolonged issue so that the marathon hunger striker's life could be saved.
