Sikhong Sekmai demands Municipality status

Chairperson, Councillors and Ward Members of Sikhong Sekmai Nagar Panchayat have demanded the Government for upgradation to Municipality status.
Speaking to reporters in a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, Nagar Panchayat Chairman Md Amu Khan claimed that that Sikhong Sekmai Nagar Panchayat has all the required resources, population and infrastructures to become a Municipality.
He said that the Nagar Panchayat has a population of around 9768 people.
However, the total population would increase to 20,768 if the population of villages like Lourembam, Asipat Langmaithel and Ingourok are added.
Contending that the Nagar Panchayat is currently drawing Rs 7000 per month from toll tax, shop tax and parking lots, the Chairman added that the revenue would increase if it is upgraded to Municipality status.
Md Amu Khan also said that Sikhong Sekmai bazar is convenient for business purposes as it serves as a meeting point for people coming from Ukhrul, Chandel and Senapati.
Md Amu Khan further said that Sikhong Sekmai already has a police station, PHC, veterinary office, water supply scheme and Government Model School.
He added that the distance of Sikhong Sekmai from the State capital is 40 Kms and people from different communities like Meitei, Naga, Kuki and Muslim are residing together.
Councillors and Ward Members were also present at the press conference.
