Underlining the indispensability of streamlining the administrative set up of the Manipur University to meet academic challenges of the modern age the University, Chancellor Dr SS Sidhu highlighted the need for opening vocational courses in the varsity.
Addressing the 25th Senate session of MU yesterday, the Chancellor opined formulation of a �Vision Document� by the university as part of an action plan to cater to educational requirements of the new era.
In addition to the existing curricula offered through regular BA, BCom and BSc courses Dr Sidhu strongly advocated introduction of vocational courses to make studies more job oriented while desiring introduction of internal assessment and establishing career guidance, human rights and women cells in the University.
Recalling the satisfaction expressed by the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in reference to academic records achieved by the MU during the PM�s Ninth Convocation address in November last year, the Chancellor also reminded the session of the Indian PM�s assurances to upgrade MU into a Central varsity.
Mention may be made that the Union Cabinet had yesterday approved conversion of MU into Central University.
The Governor further expressed confidence that with the elevation of MU financial constraints that choked development of the only University in Manipur could be erased to a great extent and pave the way in pursuit of academic excellence by the faculty, scholars and students as well.
The Chancellor also called upon the University officials to ensure transparency, financial discipline and strict adherence to rules and regulations once the Centre grants Central status to MU.
Exulting at the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore conferring Grade �B� status to MU in cognizance of its achievements the Governor called upon all concern to strive for alleviation of the University as one of the highest learning institute in the country.
Presenting the welcome address of the Senate session MU�s Vice Chancellor Prof N Bijoy Singh elaborated on outstanding features of the University.
Explaining on the facts, Prof Bijoy said based on the MU motto of �Knowledge is Wisdom�, 23 departments have could be established under the three core school of studies - School of Humanities, Science and Social Science.
Under the various departments, doctorate degrees could be granted to over 600 students/scholars in addition to currently providing training to several others in the subject streams of arts, science, computer application, business administration etc.
Referring to advancement and promotion of information technology through internet, INFONET and INFLIBET in the University, the VC announced endeavour to extend facility of EDUSAT.
He also announced latest affiliation of three technical/engineering colleges to the long list of affiliated institutes to the University that currently boast of 72 colleges which are extending career opportunity in arts, science and commerce streams.
