Imphal, March 30:
Protesting against the torching of two IMC trucks by unidentified men at the Council's garage on 26 March at around 7.30, councillors and employees of Imphal Municipal Council staged a dharna in front of the Council's gate today.
Besides causing severe damages to the two vehicles, the garage was also partially damaged during the fire.
The fire was however doused by the fire fighter who rushed to the scene on receiving reports about the fire.
Six jerry cans suspected to be used by the miscreants were recovered from the site.
Talking to mediapersons, chairperson of the Council G Moirangjao Kabui said that IMC employees have stopped ferrying garbages since 27 March as the Council has no extra vehicle for ferrying the garbage.
Condemning the incident as insane and uncivilised, he informed that the two vehicles were engaged in transporting garbage from Paona Bazar and Thangal Bazar.
Recalling that three vehicles of the council including one ambassador car allotted to the Chairperson were also burnt earlier, he appealed to all the concerned organisation to refrain from committing such act in future as IMC is an autonomous body run by its own source of income.
Answering to a query, Moirangjao said that sanitation works will be stopped till Govt repairs the damaged vehicles or procure new ones.
So far the Govt authorities have not given an explicit reply on the matter, he added.
Owing to acute financial problems besetting the IMC the Council authorities have not been able to repair the damaged vehicles, he said adding that an earnest appeal would be made to the Govt to provide security cover at the IMC complex to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
