Bishnupur, December 21 2019:
To prevent burning of crop residue after harvesting and to promote organic farming, Loumee Sinmi Apunba Lup (LOUSAL) Manipur in collaboration with Development and Protection United Voluntary Organisation, Nambol kicked off hoarding and poster campaign for the District at the office premises of the latter, today.
Speaking to media persons during the inaugural function of the campaign, LOUSAL Manipur president, Mutum Churamani stated that the programme is being initiated under the supervision of Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA) to encourage straw recycling.
Stating that LOUSAL has been conducting several campaigns since 2012-13 to spread awareness about the ill effect of using chemical fertilizer in agricultural practices, he added that similar campaign is also conducted in different parts of the State, currently as per the instruction of the Indian Government.
The campaign was launched for Imphal-East and Imphal-West on December 7 last and on December 20, the campaign was set in motion for Thoubal and Kakching Districts at Keirak, he continued.
If all the farmers started producing organic food, then the public health risk in the State would be reduced drastically, Churamani said and added that the lup is also considering to organise a non-residential camp very soon to raise awareness about the harmful effects caused by in-organic fertilizer as well as insecticide and pesticide on public health.
Saying that stubble burning not only creates air pollution but it also adversely affects the quality and fertility of the soil, he appealed all the farmers not to burn the straw which has nutritional value but to spread it on their fields.
The campaign was also attended by different office bearers of Development and Protection United Voluntary Organisation Nambol, including its president Taorem Khaba Khuman, working president K Suleshwor and secretary, Lamjingba among others.
On the other hand, an awareness programme on the benefits of organic food was held on Friday at Keirak Yawabung Keithel Macha under Kakching District.
The programme is organised by Loumee Shinmee Apunba Lup (LOUSAL) Manipur and Keirak Unit under the supervision of Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA).
As part of the programme, a street corner meeting, poster, hoarding and publicity campaigns which will be conducted at different locations of Thoubal and Kakching Districts to spread awareness about the benefits of organic food was initiated.
