Imphal, March 10, 2010:
The overall rate of income tax payment among officers of Government Departments and business persons in Manipur is reportedly miserable which could be assumed from fact that out of 500 non-tribal businessmen in Churachandpur town only 30 of them filed their income tax return for this year.
Disclosing this during an exclusive chat with The Sangai Express, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Imphal Range, Government of Manipur LD Mate (IRS) informed that income tax return which used to be as much as Rs 14 crores during the fiscal year 1999-2000 has declined in the last fiscal, thus indicating that many income tax payers are evading from filing their income tax return.
In order to improve the situation and encourage payment of income tax, Mate said he himself led an official team of the TSD (Tax Deducted At Sources), Income Tax Department and met DDOs of the State Government in Churachandpur district during which meetings were also held with the businessmen.
After these meetings, it has been confirmed that DDOs of the district do not deduct the required taxes properly and out of 500 non-tribal businessmen in the district headquarters of Churachandpur only 30 of them filed their income tax returns, Mate disclosed.
While appealing to the non-tribal businessmen to file their income tax returns voluntarily without waiting for any reminder, Mate informed that similar drive would also be conducted in the border town of Moreh very soon.
Once the pay scale of the 6th Central Pay is effected in Manipur, around 70,000 Government employees would become taxable.
Besides IAS officers, other officers do not filed their income tax returns in Manipur.
So a special drive would also be launched in the Income Tax Office at Imphal so as to collect more revenue, Mate further disclosed.
