STDC to hold public convention on Sep 24

The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee, Manipur (STDCM) is poised to organise a public convention on September 24 to discuss future steps and initiatives .
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, the committee's convenor, Mutum Churamani said that STDCM has been demanding the inclusion of the Meitei in the ST list of Article 342(1) of the Indian Constitution and as a part of the demand process, a mass rally was organised on September 18, 2016 in the State .
He pointed out that replying to a star question raised by Wangkhem Kendra MLA, K Meghachandra in the 11th State Assembly session, Chief Minister N Biren Singh recommended the Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribe to see if all the necessary criteria are fulfilled in the demand of inclusion of Meitei into ST category .
But any official step regarding the inclusion of Meitei to the ST list, need minute consultation with the people, he added .
He claimed that the on May 19, 2016, Central Government had instructed the State Government to send a recommendation containing all the necessary documents in connection with a memorandum submitted by the committee, but the State Government has failed to take up any tangible actions till date .
Churamani said that taking into account the negligence of the State Government, the Meitei people need to unite and collectively urge the Central Government for positive results .
He pointed out that a public convention will be held on September 24 at Iboyaima Lamyanba Shanglen to discuss the necessary steps which can be taken up .
Churamani also expressed belief that the State Government would take up necessary actions taking into account the interest of the people .
The demands raised by the committee and the steps it has taken till now are all in accordance with the framework of the Indian Constitution, he added .
The convenor also urged all those who oppose the demand to come forward and take part in a peaceful discussion to eliminate any possible side effect.
