Seminar on indegenous fruits held

The State Government, through Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Imphal sponsored a two-day State level seminar on indegenous fruits and its economic values which was held at Kamjong block headquarters under the aegis of the Ningthi Youth at KDC, Kamjong, Mungchan Zimik reports.
Inuagurating the two-day seminar HA Vareishang, Member, ADC, Ukhrul stressed on the importance of abiotic and biotic factors, there relationship and its roles and effect on climatic condition.
ADC Member, Mark Luithing elaborated on the need to set up a cold storage in the district to ensure that the crops are available throughout the year.
Ngaranpam Vashum, HDO, Ukhrul enlightened the fruit farmers on the importance of indegenious fruits, their economical values and health benefits.
He dwelt on the method of preservating fruits noting the various medicinal values of fruits like gooseberries, wild olive etc, which are abundantly found in the State.
The State reserves over 2.5 lakh hectares of land for horticulture out of which only a few percentage are being utilized, Shangam SCO, Horticulture said.
He further encouraged youths to take up horticulture maintaining that the field can generate a handsome income.
Fruit growers from both Kuki and Tangkhul communities along with women Self Help Groups attended the two-day seminar.
