Regional Director of National Institute of Open School Dr Rajesh Kumar has asserted that the State Government of Manipur and the National Institute of Open School (NIOS) have been trying hard to take all possible measures to curb malpractices reported during the conduct of examinations.
In a statement, the Regional Director said that NIOS is an autonomous MHRD Government of India institution which provides school education through distance mode of education throughout India with special focus on disadvantaged section of the society, rural youth, urban poor and women.
It has a number of flexibilities to help in continuing their education such as age bar for admission, low fee, choice of subjects, freedom to pace study and take examination.
It provides quality education at the doorstep of the learners.
It provides basic education and secondary and senior secondary courses together with about 100 vocational education programmes.
In Manipur NIOS gas 45 study centres and every year more than 8559 students take admission in difference courses.
NIOS has set up 24 examination centres this year for more than 9757 students.
Recently, NIOS received a report of examination paper leakage from Manipur and swiftly acted upon it by sending a very high level team from headquarters at Noida and from its regional centre at Guwahati on April 19.The team established that the Thoubal and Churachandpur Branches of United Bank of India joined hands with two schools of Thoubal namely, Maipak High School and MA Wahab Islamic Public School and one school of Churachandpur (Royal Academy) together with some unknown persons to sell question papers, extort money from poor students and their parents, and damage the image of NIOS.
Accordingly, NIOS instantly cancelled the erring examination centres and rescheduled 6 question papers and an FIR was lodged at Thoubal Police Station.
The rescheduled dates of the examinations are Secondary Course English (Code 202): May 15, 2008; Senior Secondary Course Political Science (Code 317): May 16, 1008; Senior Secondary Course Accountancy (Code 320): May 17, 2008; Senior Secondary Course Sociology (Code 321): May 19, 2008; Senior Secondary Course Word Processing (Code 327): May 21, 2008 and Senior Secondary Course Psychology (Code 327): May 22, 2008 .
Earlier also NIOS had been deputed officers on special duties (OSDs), setting up centres at Government schools.
KV, and was taking extra vigil during evaluation process (which had resulted in large number of withheld of results), the Regional Director added.
