A two day cocoon mela organised by the Imphal East Primary Sericulture Co-operative Federation was opened at Kangla hall here today.
The opening function was attended by Health and Family Welfare Minister Ph Parijat, president of Imphal East Primary Sericulture Co-operative Federation L Kullachandra and social worker Langpoklakpam Shanti as presidium members.
Speaking at the inaugural function, the District Sericulture Officer, Imphal East asserted that sericulture is viable means to eradicate poverty in the State.
Under the Manipur Sericulture Project, Imphal East district has 502 Field Operating Units (FOUs).
Each unit employs 5 persons at the least.
As such the Sericulture project is giving employment to 2510 persons directly in Imphal East district, he observed.
One kilogram of cocoon costs Rs 130 to Rs 150.A silk worm gets mature within 15 to 20 days.
Cocoons can be collected only after the worms have matured, he explained.
Ph Parijat called upon the people to alleviate poverty through sericulture project.
