Imphal, October 15 2011:
The day-long general strike called by the Coordination Committee of KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK (Pro), RPF, UNLF and UPPK has passed off peacefully this evening.
Even as the general strike was on, protests were held by burning copies of the merger agreement while items signifying India were torn and defiled.
There is no report of any untoward incident during the 17 hours long general strike.

In spite of the stringent security measures taken up by the Government to thwart any subversive activity, there was little vehicular movement on all major roads and streets of Imphal.
All commercial centres and markets wore deserted looks.
All passenger carriers and private vehicles stayed off the roads, except for a few vehicles carrying sick people or out on religious or emergency purposes.
All schools and colleges remained shut.
Attendance in Government offices was also negligible.
Like in Khwairamband Keithel, all important market centres of Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur were closed.
The impact of the general strike was also reflected in Churachandpur district.
Presence of people in important markets of Churachandpur district headquarters was greatly reduced.
But the general strike had little effect on Ukhrul, Senapati, Tamenglong and Chandel districts.
Nevertheless, people felt some difficulties as all inter-district passenger carriers stayed off the roads.

The general strike called on 'National Black Day' (October 15) did not cause any disturbance to air service.
However, Jiribam sub-division was severely affected by the general strike.
In Jiribam too, vehicles stayed off the roads excepting those of security personnel.
Government offices and educational institutions remained shut, reports our correspondent.
